It&#8217;s a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result.<\/p>\n<p>A project is <strong>temporary<\/strong> in that it has a defined beginning and end in time, and therefore defined scope and resources.<\/p>\n<p>And a project is <strong>unique<\/strong> in that it is not a routine operation, but a specific set of operations designed to accomplish a singular goal. So a project team often includes people who don\u2019t usually work together \u2013 sometimes from different organizations and across multiple geographies.<\/p>\n<p>The development of software for an improved business process, the construction of a building or bridge, the relief effort after a natural disaster, the expansion of sales into a new geographic market \u2014 all are projects.<\/p>\n<p>And all must be expertly managed to deliver the on-time, on-budget results, learning and integration that organizations need.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Project management,<\/strong> then, is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements.<\/p>\n<p>PMI\u2019s\u00a0<em>A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Guide)<\/em>identifies its recurring elements:<\/p>\n<p>Project management <em>processes<\/em> fall into five groups:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Initiating<\/li>\n<li>Planning<\/li>\n<li>Executing<\/li>\n<li>Monitoring and Controlling<\/li>\n<li>Closing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Project management <i>knowledge<\/i> draws on ten areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Integration<\/li>\n<li>Scope<\/li>\n<li>Time<\/li>\n<li>Cost<\/li>\n<li>Quality<\/li>\n<li>Procurement<\/li>\n<li>Human resources<\/li>\n<li>Communications<\/li>\n<li>Risk management<\/li>\n<li>Stakeholder management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-271 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.regelgroup.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/PMframework.gif\" alt=\"PMframework\" width=\"600\" height=\"476\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">PMI&#8217;s Project Management Framework<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is Project Management?
